PRESS RELEASE

Weir Win Boosts Gainesville Citizens As “Diesel Center” Risk Looms

Executive director says: “Bob’s win seats a longtime citizen-fighter. The real fight is on.”

Haymarket, Virginia (February 27, 2023) – Gainesville district voters elected long-time fighter for citizens’ interests, Bob Weir, as their Supervisor, a win for residents opposed to encroaching industrialization and increasing corruption. Weir’s election comes just as County officials’ environmentally disastrous decisions to place data centers in the Rural Crescent has been compounded by a state proposal to power them using diesel generators.

“Gainesville citizens scored a win with Bob Weir, proving our district is not for sale!” Coalition executive director Elena Schlossberg said. “Bob is fearless, and brings extensive experience across town, county, and state government – and a much-needed voice for a district deserted by a self-enriching former supervisor and denigrated by the self-aggrandizing current Chairwoman.”

Schlossberg noted, “While we cannot rest on a single win, I know citizens in this district are relieved this seat is free from the ethics-free zone known as Pete Candland, who vacated with both County and Commonwealth’s attorneys on his heels, and a recall hanging over his head.”

“I’d say ‘good riddance’ and be done with it,” Schlossberg continued, “but the dereliction and desertion we have experienced leave Bob and the citizens of this district with a mountain of real work – and real risk. I’m grateful to have someone who understands both County and State government representing us. And the threats are coming from both levels.”

“What do we face?,” Schlossberg asked. “A lot – it’s ugly, and it’s coming fast. The latest scandal is that Virginia’s own Department of Environmental Quality – and this is not a joke – is proposing that data centers in Prince William and two other counties be given variances from air pollution controls so they can literally run thousands of diesel generators normally prohibited from operating at such industrial scale. First the County changed the rules to make a few people rich; now the State wants to change the rules to make the rest of us inhale the fumes.”

“That’s why we’re here today,” Schlossberg added, “Bob’s win was just one victory in a long series of battles. We’ll be offering comments to the DEQ on their proposed diesel-powered data center dumping into our rural and residential areas. And let me summarize our position: compounding corruption with pollution amounts to twice the stupidity.”

Schlossberg concluded, “Bob’s win shows citizens still vote for integrity despite the inpouring of influencing dollars. And despite officials in both parties playing dirty tricks on behalf of their unholy trinity of big-tech big-union big-money handlers. We have fought here at McCoart, and in Richmond, against coin-operated elected officials and their enablers in regulatory and planning agencies. We’re ready to do that again, for as long as it takes.”
