Jeanine Lawson: Rural Plan – Call to Action

Fellow Residents,

Thank you to all the people who have stayed engaged on the Rural Crescent. The battle to protect the rural area rages on.

Citizens from the east and west were clear at our joint town hall that they want to preserve the rural area and they did not want sewer lines extended. I need you to again take a strong stand for preserving and protecting the rural area by attending the PWC Planning Dept’s meeting on September 24 (details below).

The PWC planning staff issued their Rural Area recommendations last Tuesday. These flawed recommendations do not reflect citizen input which was overwhelmingly against extending sewer or increasing density. The current staff recommendation for the rural area contains changes that would greatly increase housing density in the rural area.  The staff recommendation not only allows for sewer extension, but also doubling or tripling the density (#of homes allowed to be built on an acre).  For example, planning staff is proposing to allow sewer on 400 acres behind and surrounding Patriot HS and T. Clay Wood ES.  Imagine Vint Hill and Kettle Run becoming like the Linton Hall corridor with all the homes!

This type of recommendation not only destroys our green open space, but it transfers financial resources away from the parts of the county with dense populations and diverts it to an area that would need many infrastructure improvements to handle that type of growth. In addition, the staff recommendation appears to confuse the public that only four areas of the Rural Crescent would be affected. In reality, anyone in the rural area could apply for that type of rezoning to increase density and connect to sewer. It essentially opens up the entire Rural Crescent to sewer and the potential of higher density development.

Hope to see you at this Planning Department meeting:
