Dear Coalition Supporters and Friends,
If only we could turn this energy infrastructure onslaught into a game. With prizes.
But this is not a game, and it certainly isn’t fun.
In addition to the massive concrete data center buildings and the land they consume, there are also the substations, the high-voltage electric transmission lines, the water usage, the noise from the servers and the chiller units on top, the diesel generators, …
NOW come the Gas pipelines to feed the data center power demands. There will be Gas plants and turbines to follow.
There is a problem with what is being forecast:
Dominion was required to disclose how much electrical capacity they have contracted with the data center industry. In July 2024, they said it was 21.4 GW of capacity for data centers. Six months later, in December of 2024 (the last disclosure Dominion is willing to provide), they said it was 40.2 GW of contracted capacity with data centers.
If Dominion’s power commitment to the data center industry is doubling every 6 months – what is the updated power forecast NOW? – ONE YEAR LATER?
Extrapolating out the every-6-month doubling forecast reality, this means the JLARC prediction for a large gas plant required to be added every 1.5 year to power data center demands is most likely 2X higher – meaning every 9 months for the next 15 years?!
Virginia is the sacrificial lamb being consumed at the altar of the Data Center ‘god.’
“Data center proposals, tied to artificial intelligence work sought by technology and financial companies, are changing the landscape of some swaths of rural America. Virginia alone could see electricity demands triple by 2040 because of data center growth. The state, home to several federal agencies, has been keen to accommodate business interests tied to AI.
The Virginia General Assembly’s policy research unit has estimated that a new 1.5 gigawatt gas plant, enough to power about 375,000 homes, would need to be built every 18 months for 15 consecutive years as part of the energy mix needed if all the data center proposals become reality.”
WHAT CAN YOU DO: Keep. Showing. Up.
Your input matters now – more than ever. NOTHING will change if we don’t stand up and demand that it change.
This is ALL our future. We MUST use our power as voters to hold our elected leaders accountable, at every level of government, to demand change.
