Supervisor Bob’s replacement – what qualities are needed?

On Thursday night, August 7, Gainesville District residents, along with other Digital Gateway opponents, flocked to Giuseppe’s Restaurant in Haymarket.  No invitation required.  All of these people, who respected and loved Bob Weir, wanted to be where we could celebrate the win of the Oak Valley lawsuit decision to overturn the Digital Gateway rezoning, in a place where we knew Bob’s presence could still be felt.  (We want to be sure you see ALL the pictures, in addition to those already posted on the Coalition Facebook page!)

For outsiders – who are not familiar with the Gainesville District – it may be hard to understand this ability to put aside partisan differences and to work together toward a common goal – but we do, as evidenced in these pictures above.

Bob Weir was gifted in the way he managed to cross party lines, and as our supervisor, he knew that his job was to represent ALL of his constituents.

We should revere those elected leaders who bring people together.

Here are some questions we believe each person should research about all the candidates running in the firehouse primaries to fill Bob Weir’s seat since his untimely passing.  You can base your own decision on the verifiable facts.

  • What “roots” has each candidate cultivated for themself and/or their family in the Gainesville District?
  • In what tangible ways has each candidate participated in the issues facing the Gainesville District?
  • What public statements has each candidate made prior to running for office about the data center proliferation in the Gainesville District, and in particular on the Digital Gateway?
  • What public statements has each candidate made prior to running for office that address the threats to the natural and cultural resources unique to the Gainesville District?
  • Has each candidate committed to voting NO on the Digital Gateway if it comes back before the Board of Supervisors?
