Gainesville District Supervisor Bob Weir passes away – PW Perspective

“What are ya gonna do” was a common refrain from Bob.  It was neither a question nor a statement.   It hung somewhere in between, like a participle, just dangling as a placeholder for whatever unknown action needed to come next.

Bob was tough.  Bob was no nonsense.  But Bob also had a deep level of caring.

Bob was a rare human being. He was the same in private as he was in person. Bob said what he meant, and he meant what he said.  What a rare quality.  He never strung words together to say a lot of nothing. He abhorred “blather” and “blah blah blah blah.”

He could not be intimidated, bullied, or bought off.

He never gave up.  He simply recalibrated how to move forward. No one will ever know the totality of the difference Bob made in our community, for individuals, and for the state.  There are simply too many examples to enumerate. He preferred to stay under the radar, helping people not for recognition, but because he was a decent human being, with a unique skill set.

He had strong principles and did not suffer fools or those driven by greed and power.  He was happy to never truly fit into any pre-ordained bucket.

His friends included every category of human race, gender, political ideology, and religion.

Bob’s wealth of knowledge on so many levels was unsurpassed.  He stepped up to serve because he knew he could make a difference.  And he did — every time he spoke truth to power in public as a citizen, or on the dais as an elected leader.

There are few people in the world that lived their truth, as confidently, as unabashedly, and as unapologetically as Bob Weir.

Let’s be real.  No one can replace Bob.  But he was a part of a team, and that team is still here, and we will carry on.

As soon as memorial plans are organized, we will share them with the community.

We raise a glass of bourbon, or Michelob Ultra Light, and give a toast to Bob.  And we say Thank You.

Rest in Peace dear friend.  May Your Memory Be a Blessing.

Because, after all, “What are ya gonna do.”

We will do exactly what we need to do.  Continue on.

There is much work still to be done.
