In the midst of a pandemic no less….
This community still shows up to protect one its most unique assets – the Rural Crescent.
Gainesville Commissioner Rick Berry said it so eloquently, “After reading all the emails, both pro and con on this application, and listening to the in-person and virtual speakers this evening, I continue to believe that the Rural Crescent is one of the most important assets the County has – and that it benefits all citizens.“
After the fourth attempt, the Classic Concepts’ Preserve at Long Branch (Mid-County Estates) application was rejected by the commissioners – by a margin of 6-2.
Coles Planning Commissioner Joe Fontanella had clearly done his homework. His questions and comments were thoughtful, laser focused, and on-point. Brentsville Planning Commissioner Patti McKay, not be outdone, had her own pertinent questions, and pointed out critical inconsistencies in both the Staff report and the application itself. Commissioners Taylor, Milne, and Perry joined with them to vote to deny the CPA application; with Commissioner McPhail then adding his vote to the denial of the Rezoning application.
But it was the citizens that led the charge. Bravo!
If only every vote in this county were led by good policy, and not politics. This Planning Commission truly led by example. Let us hope their lead is contagious on the Board of Supervisors!
This win is only one in a long string of battles. The war to protect the best land use tool in the entire Northern Virginia region, benefiting all corners of this county, isn’t over. While we recognize that fact, we needed to ensure that citizens understand: YOU continue to make a difference.
Watch this space for what comes next.
Please take this opportunity to personally thank your planning commissioners.
