NEW DEADLINE: Aug. 31 for comments on the Rural Crescent Plan

Following continuous and vocal pressure for more time to review and submit comments on the Rural Area “Preservation” Study, the Planning Office has agreed to extend the public comment period to the end of August.

Under the guise of saving open space, the various proposals presented by the Planning Office will, in reality, cause the opposite result.

Planning staff would like the community to believe that developing the Rural Crescent will save the Rural Crescent. Don’t be fooled. Planning staff throws around terminology like “conservation easement“ with no understanding of how easements are legally enforced. Planning staff carves out a “transition ribbon,” encompassing thousands of Rural Crescent acres, intended to supported houses on as little as .4 acres – where no infrastructure exists! Do you know what else they fail to mention? Almost every newly designated scenic byway runs along or in close proximity to this “transition ribbon.”

The Rural Crescent isn’t broken. It has served all of Prince William County to prevent sprawl, in spite of all the efforts to dismantle it!

It is time for our entire County Board to embrace this unique land use tool. The Rural Crescent is our legacy – claim it!
