State Delegation of Prince William County Votes Against Burying Haymarket Power Lines; Chairman Stewart and Western Supervisors Express Disappointment
Woodbridge, VA – On Tuesday, the Virginia House of Delegates voted 63-35-2 to pass House Bill 1558, which included language to require burying the Dominion Haymarket power transmission lines. For years, the Board of County Supervisors has been advocating for the burial of these lines, known as the hybrid route along I-66. Chairman Corey A. Stewart had the following to say:
“I am disappointed in the majority of the Delegates from Prince William County, who voted against burying the power lines in Haymarket. These Delegates should have known how devastating these power lines would have been to our community. I want to thank Delegate Tim Hugo, who spearheaded the effort in the General Assembly to bury the lines, and Delegate John Bell, who together stood with the residents of Western Prince William County and voted to bury the power lines.”
Brentsville District Supervisor Jeanine Lawson and Gainesville District Supervisor Pete K. Candland, whose districts are impacted by the proposed lines, expressed similar disappointment.
Said Lawson, “For over three years, our Board has worked in a bipartisan manner to stand up for our citizens against Dominion Energy. It is frustrating that with the exception of Delegate John Bell, the Democrats in the Prince William County Delegation did not unite to support Delegate Tim Hugo’s efforts to finally achieving the goal of burying the power lines along I66.”
“Delegate Tim Hugo and the Prince William Board of County Supervisors have stood shoulder to shoulder for years in only supporting the burial of the power lines along I-66,” Candland added. “Working with community groups, we have fought off each harmful routing plan and Delegate Hugo has shown extraordinary leadership in finding a solution. To see blatant partisan politics by the majority of our Prince William delegation almost destroy the efforts of our community is extremely disappointing.”
